Air Rifle Skills

Air rifle skills are essentially martial art skills. The martial arts are not limited to empty hand fighting, but to weaponry as well. Shooting and therefor air rifle skills, fall into this category. It amazes me that many people don't seem to get this. Particularly when it comes to buying an air rifle for a youngster. You wouldn't allow your child to play alone with a Katana, so why would you allow him to shoot an air rifle without proper supervision and training?

Air Rifle Safety
Seen from the martial perspective, air rifle training must include the same duties and responsibilities that other martial arts have codified. Among them is respect for oneself and others; or as uncle Ben told Peter Parker so succinctly - with great power comes great responsibility. The basic air rifle safety rules should be taken to heart by all shooters even before the first pellet is fired. Air rifle safety rules are designed to remind you to have respect for yourself, others (including all other living creatures) and your air gun. It is important for everyone to learn these rules by heart. The following basic air rifle safety rules are adapted from the Canadian Cadet Movement's Air Rifle Training Aide-Memoire.

Proper Eye Usage
When aiming an air rifle both eyes should be kept open as eyes are constantly working together. However, everyone has a master or dominant eye, which should be used for aiming. How do you identify the aiming eye?

Shooting Positions
The basic air rifle shooting positions are the Prone Position (lying down) and Standing Position. Adopting an excellent position or stance will not ensure an excellent performance, but adopting a poor position will most definitely assure you of a poor shooting performance.
