Basic Air Rifle Safety Rules

Kids must never be allowed to shoot their air rifle without proper supervision. If the supervisor is you the parent, you need to know the basic air rifle rules off by heart too and you need to make sure the child obeys every rule. Failing to do this is negligent. We know how excited kids are when they get their first air rifle. They will probably not hear a single word you say to them in their eagerness to squeeze off the first shot. Be firm. Stress the faith you have in them to be responsible and to remember the rules. Having to learn the basic air rifle safety rules will only enhance their enjoyment of shooting in the long run.

The rules are:
  1. Always treat your air rifle as though it is loaded. It must be considered dangerous until proven otherwise.
  2. Never point your air rifle at anyone or any living creature.
  3. Always point your air rifle in a safe direction.
  4. Always hold the air rifle with the barrel pointing up when carrying it.
  5. Never curl your finger around the trigger unless you are about to shoot.
  6. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling lead pellets and never keep lead pellets in your mouth when shooting. The reasons are obvious - trace amounts of lead can build up on your fingers and be transferred to to your mouth, nose and eyes. This can increase lead levels in your body. As children, we would often keep our pellets in our mouth for easy access, but this was before the dangers of lead poisoning were fully understood.
These basic safety rules will ensure you have a long and happy relationship with your air rifle.
